It’s not that uncommon for an adult to smack a child–and certainly there have been times when it’s crossed everyone’s mind. But novelist Christos Tsiolkas explores the emotions and chain of events set off by one such incident: a man slapping another’s child. The Slap is Tsiolkas’s scathing look at Australia’s suburban middle class–a novel that is now being adapted for Australian television. Filming has already begun on the eight-part series which will be aired later this year. Each one-hour episode will focus on the perspective of a different character–and to amplify the difference viewpoints, four directors–Jessica Hobbs, Matthew Saville, Tony Ayres, and Robert Connelly–will direct two episodes each. The cast is also impressive: Oscar-nominee Sophie Okonedo of Hotel Rwanda fame and Essie Davis, who appeared in Girl With a Pearl Earring, to name two.
