Being, again

Vicky Valanos

Alexia, undisputedly Greece’s first pop queen of the 1990s, is back with a new triple album of her own lyrics and composition that is anything but pop. With many gold and platinum albums under her belt, she was not content to continue singing other peoples’ compositions and dove head-on into the previously unknown waters of composing, writing lyrics, and producing her own work.
This Greek-Cypriot chanteuse was born in Famagusta, Cyprus, and experienced the Turkish invasion in 1974 first-hand when her family lost their home and was displaced in their own country. Alexia officially hit the music scene in the 1980s when she performed twice in the Eurovision song contest, in 1981 as a member of the group Island performing “Monica” and in 1987, again representing Cyprus but this time on her own, with “Aspro-Mavro”–which later went platinum in Greece and the Nordic region. She went on to study music at Berklee College in Boston where she collaborated with the likes of Larry Fast (musician with Peter Gabriel), David Sonenberg (manager of Meatloaf, Black-Eyed Peas), and Chick Corea to name a few. Upon moving back to Greece, Alexia quickly became the nation’s first queen of pop, releasing over twenty albums, many of which reached gold and platinum. Her collaboration with Greece’s best composers cemented her name as one of the country’s most talented singers.  Not content to rest on her laurels, Alexia began a long collaboration with legendary composer Mikis Theodorakis and released the biggest-selling jazz album in Greece, featuring jazz heavy-hitters Chick Corea and Gary Burton.
Her next turn lead her to composing and writing her own music, a process that took the better part of a decade. The new album ReBe is the result of delving deep into the evocative and creative spirit that always existed in this multi-talented singer and composer. Alexia describes the album as “a very private and at the same time, a very open dialogue with myself. It is the bridge that connects me to me, then to others, anew.”  This inspirational work is the result of unhindered creativity, when an artist is left to explore and create, and the result is mystifying, original and enjoyable.
The tracks, fifty in all, are a fusion of jazz styles with vocals that range from spoken word, seemingly improvised dances around the melody. It is, as some reviews note, about being again, or re-being.
For Alexia finding inspiration is a daily task, she delves into time and the work of all aspects of what we call art, connecting to it and herself, re-creating and treading new ground. It is a constantly changing and evolving process whereby life’s experiences leads one to new interpretations and modes of communication.
The daring triple album is a work of art in itself. It harks back to the days of buying an album rather than downloading it. Its artwork is also unique (Alexia’s own), the CDs themselves ingeniously look like mini-vinyls and a book of memories and lyrics is included in the eco-packaging, designed by Alexia and artist Pantelis Pantelopoulos.
Alexia is now living in Los Angeles performing in various venues in the United States and working on several short films. It seems as if her horizons for creativity know no bounds.
